SKYTRANS CELEBRATES WIN
November 2009
The team at Skytrans are today celebrating after the announcement of their Department of Transport and Main
Roads Tender win. The State Government announced earlier today that Skytrans was the successful airline
selected to carry out the air services to a number of key destinations throughout Queensland.
After picking up where collapsed airline MacAir left off in February 2009 under an emergency services agreement
with the Queensland Government, Skytrans has now secured the routes on a long-term contract basis, after
overwhelming support from the community.
"We are very happy to hear the news today that we will be continuing to fly to these destinations. We took over
the routes under an emergency services arrangement as the people of Queensland needed a carrier, and they
needed one in record time. We are proud to be the airline that helped out in a time of community need. We have
worked very hard to not only respond to the needs of the people of Queensland, but to also continue to expand
our services while meeting the increased demand during this period.
"The effort my team has put in is a credit to them and I would like to thank each and every one of them for digging
in and getting the job done. I would also like to extend a heartfelt thanks to our loyal customers who have
continued to fly with us," said Skytrans Managing Director Simon Wild.
The DTMR regulated routes which Skytrans will continue to service under the new agreement are:
| Service |
Route Description |
| Gulf |
Cairns - Normanton - Gununa - Burketown - Doomadgee - Mount Isa - Doomadgee - Burketown - Gununa - Normanton - Cairns |
| Western 1 |
Brisbane – Toowoomba – St George – Cunnamulla
– Thargomindah – Cunnamulla – St George –
Toowoomba – Brisbane |
| Western 2 |
Brisbane – Toowoomba - Charleville – Quilpie –
Windorah – Birdsville – Bedourie – Boulia – Mount
Isa – Boulia – Bedourie – Birdsville – Windorah –
Quilpie – Charleville – Toowoomba - Brisbane |
These are arguably the most difficult routes to service in the state-wide network.
Skytrans' on-time performance since taking over the routes has been consistently higher than 90% and new
services have been introduced since operations commenced, such as Toowoomba being added to the Western 2
route in response to public demand.
"Passenger numbers continue to gather momentum and the retention of the contract means that we will proudly
be providing much needed jobs for the people of Queensland at a time when they are needed most," Mr Wild
said.
"It's been a team effort from everyone at Skytrans who have gone above and beyond to restore confidence in the
marketplace which had been lost under the previous operator. We had unprecedented support from the
communities in our bid and would like to thank them all for taking the time to forward letters of praise and for
embracing our service," he said.
